The experience of going through the PGDip TESL program has
been highly impactful for me, both professionally and personally. Each course
provided a new perspective and valuable knowledge that has deepened my
understanding of teaching English as a second language. I updated my knowledge about
important theories of second language acquisition and innovative teaching
methods. These tools have helped me better address the diverse needs of my
students.
The teaching practicum was a crucial part of my development.
My supervisor’s feedback was particularly encouraging and insightful, helping
me refine my teaching methods. This support not only boosted my confidence but
also allowed me to see new ways to manage a classroom, plan lessons, and engage
students with interactive techniques.
A key takeaway from this program has been the importance of
reflecting on my teaching practices. While I had experience on learning about
teaching from Mahaweli National College of Education 14 years ago, this course
has provided me with updated knowledge. Many teaching practices have changed
since then, and this program was an excellent opportunity to refresh my skills
as I plan to continue my teaching career.
The focus on reflective practices encouraged me to regularly
evaluate and adjust my teaching methods to create more inclusive and
student-centered environments. Moreover, the courses on curriculum design,
assessment strategies, and technology integration in language teaching have
prepared me to make English learning more engaging and relevant. Overall, this
journey has strengthened my passion for teaching and deepened my commitment to
helping students through language education.
I am leaving the program with improved skills and knowledge,
a renewed sense of purpose, and the confidence to make meaningful contributions
to the field of TESL. After all I have learned, especially from the feedback
sessions with my supervisors, I believe it is essential for teachers to undergo
observation and receive feedback at least once a year to identify and learn
from our mistakes. Although completing assignments and final exams was
challenging and there were times I felt like giving up, I persevered.
Ultimately, it was worth every penny I spent and all the sleepless nights.
